Troubleshooting

My imported script is blank or missing scenes

A script can look perfectly readable as a PDF and still be difficult for another app to interpret. The missing piece is often the structure: where a scene starts, who is speaking, and which text is action.

Use the screenplay file if you have it

Export a Final Draft (.fdx) or Fountain (.fountain) file from your writing software when possible. These formats give the app a clearer structure to work with than a PDF. Renaming a .pdf file to .fdx will not convert it; use the export or Save As option in the writing software.

If you are importing a PDF, use one with selectable text and clear screenplay formatting. A page that is only a scanned image does not provide the same readable text.

Give scene headings a recognisable form

For a text-based import, headings beginning with INT. or EXT. help the app find scenes. A heading such as “Scene 1 – Corner cafe” may be missed. In an import copy, you could write “INT. CORNER CAFE – DAY” instead.

This is especially relevant to stage plays, which often use different conventions. You do not have to rewrite the play itself: prepare a copy for importing, with recognisable scene headings and consistent character cues.

Check one scene before preparing the whole read

After reimporting, check the scene list and cast before generating audio. If the script still opens blank or combines scenes incorrectly, tell us the file format and the writing software you used. We can help work out what the importer is missing.
